A frighthened dog, without a tag was found this evening on Kelton Ave. Thanks to the neighbors for keeping the dog from running and thanks to Mr. Mark who took him to a vet and found the owner since the dog was microchiped.

CHARACTERISTICS: A resident on 3200 block of Malcolm has reported that both of their cars were broken into overnight with several items being stolen including a GPS device and glasses. One car was parked on the street in front of their house and the other was in their driveway. The cars were not damaged and the alarms were neutralized. The LAPD informed the victim that these burglars have technology to get around the car alarms.

Although there were couple of dogs in the house, that did not deter

It seems that the suspects have been disrupted by
the next door neighbor taking out the trash and left abruptly.
It appears that no valuables were taken at this time.
A black mini van was seen parked in front of the house with a female driver inside.

CHARACTERISTICS: Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon there was a break-in of a home on the 3200 block of Midvale. The family was out between 1:30 and 4:30 and it happened at that time. The place was ransacked but they aren't sure what was taken because they have been asked to leave everything as it was until LAPD checks it. It was believed that they got it through a sliding glass door that may have been unlocked.

August 2010 Update
sprinkler use Restrictions
Outdoor watering with sprinklers is restricted to three days a
week with different watering days assigned to odd-numbered
and even-numbered street addresses.
• Customers with odd-numbered street addresses – ending in
1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 – are allowed to use their sprinkler systems on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
• Customers with even-numbered street addresses – ending in
0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 – are allowed to use their sprinkler systems on
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
• Watering with sprinklers is limited to one cycle of up to 8
minutes per station per watering day for non-conserving
nozzle sprinkler systems (typical residential system), or two
15-minute cycles per watering day for conserving nozzle
sprinkler systems.
• All outdoor watering is restricted to hours before 9:00 a.m.
and after 4:00 p.m., regardless of the watering day.
Street addresses ending in fractions are treated as whole
numbers and observe the same day restrictions as others on
their same side of the street, (ie: 4321 ½ is regarded as 4321,
an odd-numbered address.)

Aw areness and Enforcement
Educational awareness efforts, and enforcement where
applicable, are conducted by the LADWP Water Conservation
Team, a group of trained professionals whose sole mission is to
spot and stop wasteful water practices. Team members actively
patrol Los Angeles communities to help inform customers of
water waste they observe in progress and learn about through
tips from neighbors and concerned citizens who call
1-800-DIAL DWP or send e-mails to
waterconservationteam@ladwp.com.
Additionally, LADWP Customer Service Field Representatives
are authorized and trained to report violations of the Ordinance.
First offenses are given a verbal “warning” in the form of
water conservation tips, water saving devices where possible
and printed educational materials in order to raise customer
awareness. Subsequent violations, however, can result in fines.
Monetary citations, when given, range from $100 to $600 and
are listed as specific charges on the LADWP utility bill. No
monetary citation is given without prior warning.

Burglary occurred sometime in the afternoon, perhaps early evening.
The suspect(s) pried open a locked back window, and ransacked the house, stealing
small items of value. Left through the back door, and as the gate remained
locked, it appears they hopped fences to get away (looks like they went
north, towards the apartment building alley).

Resident walked in the house while burglars still inside. They fled the scene through the bedroom window breaking the glass and dropping the stolen items at the neighbors backyard on Military Ave.

Lock It, Hide It , Keep It

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched a new campaign today aimed at informing the public of burglary and theft from motor vehicles (BTFV and BFMV), and providing a few simple steps to keep from becoming victims of these crimes.

On Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at 2 p.m., Operations Valley Bureau kicked off the “Lock It, Hide It, Keep It” campaign from its Headquarters in Mission Area. Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese provided statistics from the first six months of 2010 that clearly identified BTFV and BFMV as a problem in the San Fernando Valley. “The irony is that if folks would take a few extra seconds to properly store their belongings, this crime could be eliminated. There is no good reason to be the victim of a BTFV or BFMV,” Albanese said. The average cost of a BTFV to each victim is roughly $1885.00.

In February 2010, Chief Albanese recognized the high incidents of property crimes within Valley Bureau and focused Bureau resources to work exclusively on those property crimes. One of the most effective components of the VCTF has been the Bait Car Unit. Video taken during actual Bait Car Sting Operations were shown at the news conference and can be viewed on the Department’s website at www.lapdonline.org. The video is evidence that objects left in plain sight, in unlocked vehicles, are a crime of opportunity for many criminals.

The message is simple:

• Lock It: Lock your vehicle every time you leave it unattended and take your valuables with you.
• Hide It: Hide your valuables in your trunk, under the seats, in the glove box, or other compartments within the vehicle. Ideally, take your property with you.
• Keep It: Personal responsibility is the best prevention to safeguard personal property and to prevent becoming a victim.

The campaign will be emphasized throughout Valley Bureau over the next several months. Banners, billboards, and public service announcements will also be included to remind the public that property crime prevention is largely dependant upon an individual’s willingness to take the necessary precautions.

A car was burglarized early morning 8/10/10. It was parked outside on the resident's driveway and was left unlocked. From the security camera in front of the property it was detected that a car was driving south on Midvale Ave at 4:04am, seen the individual in the driveway opening the passenger side door and rummage around for approximately 7minutes. at 4:22 the car is seen driving back down the street north on Midvale.

Hot Prowl Home Burglary

TYPE: Hot Prowl Home Burglary (resident home at time of break in)
WHERE: 3500 block of Veteran
WHEN: 3:15 pm Friday, July 30th
SUSPECTS: African-American male in 20's
CHARACTERISTICS: At approx. 3:15 PM Friday (7/30/2010), a young (20-something) African-American male was seen running/escaping from the front door of the house on 3500 block of Veteran Ave.

An elderly female resident who was alone in the house heard the young man knock on her door and the windows, apparently to ensure no one was home. She did not answer the knocks.

Meanwhile, the intruder went through the back gate and into the house through the kitchen, with the elderly home-owner still in the house. As the intruder ransacked the house starting in the living room, she, the resident, slipped out quickly out of the front door and went to a neighbor across the street for help.

Meanwhile, another resident and her daughter were driving home on the 3500 block of Veteran when the daughter saw the intruder run very fast out of the house, across the yard and south to Charnock Ave. from Veteran Ave.

The intruder was carrying two unidentified long objects in his hands. He then escaped into another property on the same block of Veteran. The resident of this house and the lady who witnessed this incident from her car searched around the house but could not find him. They called 911.


Note: If someone knocks on your door that you do not know, you do not need to answer but probably should make it known someone is home. It you are concerned, tell them through the door you have already called LAPD and they should leave.

Suspect got scared and fled the scene.
No one was harmed no property taken.

Safe Summer Crime Prevention Tips

As the summer season approaches, LAPD property crimes detectives want to remind community members that taking precautions with your property, both in your house and your car, may prevent you from being the victim of a crime.

You can help us to reduce crimes and protect your valuable property by employing the following tips regularly.

● Lock doors and windows every time you go out
● Lock your windows at night
● Don’t leave cash and jewelry in plain sight. Lock up your valuables and only tell their location to people who need to know. Consider purchasing a safe that can’t be moved easily.
● Make use of a safe deposit box if you don’t have a safe.
● Close pet doors whenever possible.
● Trim bushes and trees so that your house and front door are visible from the street
● Leave lights on at night. Buy timers for your lights and set them in a random pattern.
● Keep a radio or TV on during the day
● Install motion lights around your property
● Vary your times of arrival and departure whenever possible.
● Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into a business or store.
● Always roll up the windows and lock your car even in hot weather.
● Never leave your keys in the ignition, not even in a locked garage. Beware of Hide-a- key boxes.
● Leave nothing in plain sight, including I-Pods, cell phones, GPS systems, purses and laptop computers.
● Personal identification documents, credit cards or vehicle ownership title should not be in your car.
● Park cars in well lit areas.
● Invest in alarm systems and anti-theft vehicle devices.
● Keep a copy of your license plate and vehicle identification numbers
● If your vehicle is stolen, report it immediately.
● Do not leave your wallet or other valuables unattended on park benches, picnic blankets or beach towels, even when you are playing sports or swimming.

Auto Burglary 3200/3300 Tilden 05/05/10

There were two reported vehicle break-ins on the 3200/3300 block of Tilden Ave. during the early hours of this morning

The homeowner's SUV was broken into via the back window and a laptop was taken.

Also, a guest's car was broken into across the street from 3300 Tilden.
Access was gained by breaking the rear window. Noting of value was in the vehicle.

Recently there has been an increase in Theft From Person's. We are asking people to be aware of their surroundings when in public places. The new iPhone is currently being targeted by suspects. We want to remind people not to leave items or merchandise in plain view in their vehicles. Again, iPhones, electronic devices, gym bags, lap tops, or money. Please be especially diligent when visiting Venice Beach this summer. Another item of concern in the greater Los Angeles Area is Grand Theft Auto(GTA)of Jeep Wrangler's particularly doors and soft tops.

Venice/Oakwood Community Member’s: There has been an increase in Home Burglaries while the victims are at home. As the warmer months approach please keep your doors locked even when you're inside the house.

Home Invasion / Kidnapping - Arrest

Last night at about 9:30, a resident on the 3000 block of Veteran was sitting in the kitchen watching the news when very suddenly there was an African American male dressed in black including a ski mask in the house. He was armed with a taser and a lug wrench and threatened the resident. The suspect was taken upstairs to see the jewelry, which did not suffice and there was only $50 in the house so it was offered to go to the ATM, During this time, the suspect handcuffed the resident to his house guest. They drove to the ATM at Sepulveda and Clover. The guest was assigned to make the withdrawels. He became agitated and moved to the driver's seat and drove around the building that houses the ATM. A neighbor passing in a car who clearly understood what was going on fortunately took initiative and called the police. When the police arrived, the suspect took off down Sepulveda (in the North-bound lanes) then East on Clover, then South on Bently at a high rate of speed. He crossed Queensland at full speed and the resident was yelling ïts a dead end, its a dead end. They then crashed into a tree and the suspect fled, but was apprehended by the police.

Thankfully, the resident was not seriously hurt but understandably quite shaken. Police reported the call received from the alert neighbor driving by enabled a quick response.

It should be noted that these incidents over the past three days were coincidental and not related and there is no indication of a trend developing in our neighborhood. That being said, it is very important that everyone take precautions by keeping outdoor lights on, locking gates to back yards, locking doors and windows, and looking out for neighbors, calling police to report suspicious individuals or behavior.

We offer condolences to our neighbors whom experienced these crimes. We are also thankful that the LAPD caught and arrested each suspect in each of these incidents over the past few days.

Mail Theft - Suspect Arrested

CHARACTERISTICS: A transient male on a bike was seen going through a resident's mail box on 3400 Bentley. Police were called and the suspect was arrested several blocks away. The suspect had an outstanding warrant and was found with drugs on him.

CHARACTERISTICS: An intoxicated white male destroyed a resident's property and threatened the family living there. Police arrived and placed the individual under arrest. It was reported that the altercation became very loud in the front yard yet no neighbors offered assistance or called police. It was the residents who called the LAPD.

Side Mirrors Stolen off Vehicle in Driveway

To our Westside Neighbors: At around 3:00PM on Monday (MLK Day), the stormy wind blew (whatappears to be) a healthy adult cockatiel into our yard. It was extremely cold out, and the bird was shivering from the wind. Our dogs saw the bird huddled on a ledge outside of our kitchen, and brought the bird to our attention. We were able to entice it to perchon my hand with an offer of bird seed, and it is now living in animpromptu cage in our kitchen.We know that cockatiels can really bond with their owners, so we are anxious to reunite this bird with its home.

Grand Theft Auto and Auto Burglary

WHEN: Sunday, January 3rd around 3:00 am

CHARACTERISTICS: A car was stolen from the driveway of a resident on 10700 block of National Place. Also, across the street at approximately the same time a resident reported an attempted car theft. Here the car alarm and barking dogs scared the thieves off but a GPS device was taken.

A neighbor reported later that morning observed a dark, navy blue, old model BMW sedan driven by a dark haired man with dark skin who appeared to be latino. He drove past the driveway of the attempted car theft on National Place slowly, drove past again and then a 3rd time.
