Would you like to take the CERT training course right here in Westside Village ?
In order for the Fire Department to present this FREE training, we need a minimum enrollment of 20 people and a place to hold the classes. St. John’s Presbyterian Church at Military and National has generously offered the use of their community room on Thursday evenings. As soon as we have enough confirmed attendees, we can contact the Fire Department and schedule the training.
CERT training is open to everyone, including those who took the course previously and want to refresh their disaster preparedness skills.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and your neighborhood in an emergency situation.
You will learn to:
•manage utilities and put out small fires,
•treat the three medical killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock,
•provide basic medical aid,
•search for and rescue victims safely,
•organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective,
•and collect disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts.
The training consists of 7 weekly 2-1/2 hour evening classes. If you miss a class, you can go to any other location to make it up. For more information see www.cert-la.com.
Having the CERT training, just like having car insurance, means you're as ready as you can be to help yourself, your family and your neighborhood.
You can get your emergency supplies at 75% off at the SOS parking lot sale this weekend!

Found Bird
The following is from one of our residents..
Please email us for her contact info.
On my porch on the 10800 block of Woodbine this morning I found a sweet, very pretty black and white bird - quite large in size. He had a band on one leg, did not appear to be injured but also did not appear to be able to fly. There are prowling cats in my neighborhood so with my neighbor's help we managed to get him into a box and I took him to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter on Pico Blvd. They called him a "pigeon"but he is not just any old pigeon. I am sure he is somebody's pet so I hope that this message reaches the right person. His ID# at the shelter is A1218798

UPDATE:
Officer Ceja and his family thanked everyone for your phone calls, cards and contributions. He said he is honored and privileged to be working in a community that cares so much.
With sadness, this is to report that our senior lead officer Ceja's brother, Joshua, 23 years old,was killed in a tragic hit and run accident last week. Joshu was driving his motorcycle east bound when he collided with a two door small vehicle attempting to make a left hand turn across the westbound lanes. Joshua was transported to the nearby hospital where he died of his injuries. The driver of the car fled the scene but he turned himself in the next day.
Westside Village Watch would like to extend our condolences and deepest sympathy
to officer Ceja and his family in this difficult time.
Family and friends have set up a donation fund at Wells Fargo bank under "Joshua Memorial Services"
Please contact us for any details.

Incident 3100 Veteran
The following was shared by one our residents from 3100 Veteran
"Last week, my daughter came home from a friend's house at 3:00 a.m. and, before coming inside, sat on our front porch having a cigarette. A man, white in his thirties, wearing dark shirt and hoodie, came walking down the street, headed south. He saw my daughter and asked her for a cigarette. She said she did not have one. He tried to engage her in conversation and she stood up to go inside. He walked quickly up the driveway and said he needed a place to sleep. He seemed to be intoxicated (but not homeless) . My daughter said she had to go inside and turned to the door. He put his hand on her shoulder and asked if he could come in she told him he was scaring her and he needed to stop or she would yell and her father was inside. He put his hand on her mouth and said he would hurt her if she did that and he just wanted to come in. She hit him in the head with the cell phone she was holding in her hand. This caused him to let go of her and she quickly came inside. She saw him go down the driveway and walk away. Unfortunately, she did not tell me about this until the next day. We went to the Pacific Division and made a Police report."
